John George Kemeny was born in 1926 and died in 1992. Born in Hungary, he was an American mathematician, computer scientist and educator. He is best known for being one of the two people who created the BASIC programming language in 1964.
He was the 13th president of Dartmouth College from 1970 to 1981 and was a pioneer in the use of computers in college education.
He was also the chairman of the commission that investigated the Three Mile Island accident that happened in 1979.
There was a problem with the nuclear reactor.
After some experiments with the LGP-30 (one of the earlier computers), they developed the BASIC programming language in 1964,
and they also developed one of the world’s first time-sharing systems,
which was used to share a computer with many users at the same time. thus doing joint programming and multi tasking.
In 1983, Kemeny and his friend Kurtz, with whom he formed BASIC, founded a firm called True Basic, Inc. which followed True BASIC, an updated version of the basic BASIC.
John Kemeny died at the age of 66 from a heart attack.
